Principal Flute, Toledo Symphony
"Altus flutes are some of the best modern flutes I have ever played. Their scale and mechanism are superb." - Joel Tse After completing his one year sabbatical as Principal Flute in Hong Kong Philharmonic, Joel Tse has returned to his former position at the Toledo Symphony as Principal Flute in Ohio. Previous to his position with Toledo, he was Principal Flute with the New World Symphony for 3 years in Miami Beach, Florida. He has also performed as Principal Flute with the English Chamber Orchestra, and also held positions in the Eerie Philharmonic, the Pacific Music Festival – Sapporo, Japan and in the Spoleto Music Festival in Italy. Joel has also made chamber music appearances throughout Europe, Russia, South America, Greece, Turkey, and Israel. Joel Tse received a Bachelor’s Degree from the Eastman School of Music and a Master’s Degree from Northwestern University and a Performance Diploma from the Royal Academy of Music in London, England where he received extensive study with William Bennett. His other primary teachers include Bonita Boyd, Walfrid Kujala, Jeffrey Khaner. He recently (summer 2000) received a grant from the Mellon Foundation for study in France after which he received an opportunity for perform music based on his research of French repetoire. Away from the flute he enjoys cooking, tennis, and is an excellent pottery artist. He is the proud owner of a beautiful Rottweiler dog “Callie”…who has accompanied him to Hong Kong as well!!! "As an instrumentalist his gifts are extraordinary, both musically and technically. He has a fine sense for phrasing and his tone has many possibilities for coloration and shading." -Christoph Eschenbach, Conductor Please contact Joel for information about availability for masterclasses and recitals at info@altusflutes.com.
