Flutist, Performer, Educator, and Ethnomusicologist Danilo Lozano, flute soloist, performs both innovative and accessible programs made up of music by Latin American and African American Composers, as well as rarely heard pieces of the classical and contemporary repertoire. A founding member of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra known for many highly acclaimed and popular recordings, Lozano, has emerged as a respected classical musician performing the widest possible repertoire. His 1988 European debut resulted in an invitation from Germany to join in the Zelt-Musik Festival International Flute Summit where he played with renowned virtuosos such as Aurele Nicolet and James Newton. His appearance in "Atres de Mexico", the massive 1992 Los Angeles festival, caused the Los Angeles Times to notice the recital's boldness and how Lozano "skillfully laid out his avant-garde credentials with a display of extended techniques." Born into a musical family he was greatly influenced by his father Rolando's skill and sensitivity of style. His father's recordings in the 1950s and 1960s are now considered classics that established his fame as a pioneer in Cuban Charanga and Latin Jazz flute. Continuing the musical tradition and at his father's insistence, Danilo pursued his classical training and attained a Bachelor of Music at the University of Southern California where he studied flute with John Barcellona; after which he earned a Master of Arts at UCLA. His experience at UCLA helped to solidify his experience of contemporary and world music techniques with his musicology and ethnomusicology studies. His continuing expertise as a musicologist has resulted in a prolific and much respected reputation as an author, instructor, and lecturer. He has appeared with the Los Angeles Opera Guild Orchestra, El Paso Symphony Orchestra, Mexican Arts Chamber Symphony, and Pacific Symphony Orchestra. Lozano created the world premiere recording of the Blas Galindo Concerto for flute and Orchestra with the Mexican National Symphony and was a featured soloist in Mexico City's 15th International Forum on New Music. He has worked as a studio sideman on many Latin jazz recordings and as an orchestral musician on all Hollywood Bowl releases. Although he has appeared with international musical greats Linda Ronstadt, Babatunde Olatunji, Michael Jackson, and Whitney Houston, Lozano has maintained a personal commitment to education. In addition to giving outreach concerts for Da Camera Society, he was instrumental in establishing the International Association of Jazz Appreciation's "Jazz Goes to School" program. His lecture demonstrations and master classes have been given at the Music of the Americas Festival and at University campuses around Southern California. He has taught at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, California State Polytechnical University Pomona, University of California-Los Angeles, and is currently on the faculty of Whittier College as Artist in Residence and Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology. He has received Grammy Nominations for his work with recordings- Caravan Cuban: Late Night Sessions, CUBA LA, and Dancing Through the Walls. In addition to his most recent recording, "Dos" CUBA LA on the Narada Label, other significant and outstanding recordings include Cuba Linda, Israel Lopez "Cachao", Latino Christmas, Music from the Center for Research in Electro-Acoustic Music-San Jose University: Music for Players and Digital Media, "Synergy", Danilo Lozano (recording premiere works), Urban Classical: The Music of Ed Bland "For Flute", Christmas Winds, The Art of Danilo Lozano, and Mexican Concertos (performed with the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico).
