AMY PORTER
Amy Porter has been acclaimed by major critics as an exciting and inspiring American artist who matches "her fine controlled playing to a commanding, sensual stage presence.”
Prizes include the 2006 Henry Russel Award from the University of Michigan for "distinguished scholarship and conspicuous ability as a teacher." 2001 Deuxieme Prix at the Paris/Ville d'Avray International Flute Competition in France, and the Alphonse Leduc Prize for outstanding musicianship, 1993 Kobe International Flute Competition in Kobe, Japan and the Special Prize for the best performance of the commissioned work required at the competition and First Prize at the 1990 National Flute Association Competition.
Currently, Ms. Porter is Associate Professor of Flute with tenure at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Ms. Porter has performed as Principal Flutist with the Orchestras of Atlanta, Houston and Boston and as soloist with the Orchestras of Atlanta, Houston, New Hampshire, Kansas City, Tupelo (MS), Olympia (WA), Victoria (TX) and Plymouth and Ann Arbor (MI). She has toured Japan and Southeast Asia as a concerto soloist with the New York Symphonic Ensemble. Ms. Porter made her New York debut in 1987 in Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall and has given performances at the Kennedy Center and Yale University. She has been heard in recital on National Public Radio, featured on the cover of Flute Talk Magazine, and highlighted on PBS Live From Lincoln Center.
In addition to her performance and teaching activities, Amy Porter has just completed and premiered her arrangement of Six Songs by Benjamin Godard, published by Little Piper, and has released a Study Guide DVD for the Karg-Elert "Caprices for Solo Flute," produced by Media Ferrago. Recent CD releases include the premiere recording of William Bolcom's "Lyric Concerto" with the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra on the Equilibrium label, and another CD featuring the music of Dring, Damase, Delibes, Bozza, Ginastera and Holst. She can also be heard on CBS Masterworks Recording "Bach on Wood", and "Sacred Theory of the Earth." Chamber music recordings include "Conversations" and "Soiree Sweets" with the Atlanta Chamber Player's on ACA Digital.
Houston Chronicle states in a recent review that Ms. Porter is “a performer whose enthusiasm for the music made the compositions sparkle.”
