ANDREA BRACHFELD

Performing and Recording Artist - Composer

New York based flutist, Andrea Brachfeld is a former graduate of The High School of Music & Art and The Manhattan School of Music. A well-rounded musician - she is also skilled as a pianist, guitarist and composer. Over these past 20 years she has recorded more than a dozen CDs with many artists in addition to her own material. Though she has a strong classical foundation as a flutist with former teachers Harold Bennett, Samuel Baron, and Andrew Loyla of Manhattan, she has primarily established herself as a jazz flutist. While a student, she received the Louis Armstrong Award for Outstanding Student. Initially, her skills in improvising were inspired by the style of jazz legend Eric Dolphy; and later study with jazz artists Hubert Laws, Jimmy Heath, Yusef Lateef, Joe Newman and George Coleman assisted her with the development of her own style. In fact, Downbeat Magazine has referred to Andrea as "one of the finest jazz flutists around". She has made her reputation performing mostly Latin jazz and has twice been the recipient of the Latin New York Music Award for her skills as a flutist and for her former association with the band Charanga '76. She has performed with Dave Valentin, Joe Quijano, and has had a close collaborative relationship with Noel Pointer while he was alive. She has also played opposite famed saxophonist Joe Farrell and pianist Chick Corea in addition to her playing experiences with Tito Puente, Ruben Blades and Ray Barretto. She was also a participant with Billy Taylor's Jazz Mobile Workshops. During her years in Venezuela, she had the honor of opening for Chick Corea, Gary Burton, and Paco de Lucia in addition to her long association with the typical Venezuelan style jazz orchestra "La Inmensa" and the Oscar Maggi Quartet in Caracas, Venezuela. Recent activities include several performances with various artists at the Havana Jazz Festival in Cuba this past December, 2002. Andrea also has been collaborating and touring with internationally prominent violinist Alfredo de la Fe. In addition to her re-release of "Remembered Dreams", Andrea has recorded a new work of Charanga Jazz Flute Music due out from Latin Cool Records this summer 2003. In the past Andrea Brachfeld has presented a workshop at the NFA Dallas Convention about flute and Cuban music. She is also available as a clinician for improvising as well as various styles of jazz and Latin music.
