Jazz Flutist and Recording Artist Altus Alto Flute Jamie Baum, New York flutist, composer, recording and touring artist, and clinician, has worked with a wide range of renowned musicians (i.e. George Russell, Mick Goodrick, Paul Motian, Randy Brecker, V.M. Bhatt, Kenny Barron, Karaikudi Mani, Dave Douglas, Uri Caine, etc.) as a leader and sidewoman. Receiving critical praise for three CDs as a leader, Sight Unheard on Gunther Schuller’s GM Recordings, received four stars from Down Beat as "one of the year’s most innovative projects". Her new CD Moving Forward, Standing Still will be released in 1/04 on the Omnitone label. A winner in the ‘98, ‘99, ‘01, ‘02 and ‘03 Down Beat Critics Poll, the ‘00 Readers Poll and the ‘99 International Jazz Composers Alliance Award, Baum has been chosen in ‘99 - ‘03 by the USSD/Kennedy Center Jazz Ambassador Program to perform and give workshops extensively throughout South America, Asia and South Asia. Jamie was recently named a winner of the prestigious 2003 New Works: Creation and Presentation Award, a component of the Doris Duke/Chamber Music America Jazz Ensembles Project. She received her BM degree from New England Conservatory and her MM from Manhattan School of Music. She has studied with Jaki Bayrd, Richie Bierach, Dave Liebman, Hubert Laws, Keith Underwood, Ransom Wilson, Robert Stallman, Charlie Banacos, Richard DeRosa, W. T. McKinnley and Ludmilla Ulehla. In addition to teaching privately since 1981 and through ArtsConnection In-School Programs, Ms. Baum is teaching private lessons through The New School in New York City. She has also been very active giving masterclasses, clinics and workshops for the past fifteen years and has developed two very successful workshops: “A Fear-free Approach to Improvisation for the Classically-trained Musician” and “A Jazz Flute Survey/ Retrospective”.
